As a 0-1 product, we worked with the client and engineers to develop a brand identity, establish an MVP and a comprehensive dashboard based product. By applying user's needs, habits, and behaviors to the product vision, we designed a dashboard interface easy to understand data visualization. This allowed users to efficiently manage their home systems and stay on top of their energy consumption.

After conducting a competitive analysis of other home energy products, we found three major value propositions: COST SAVINGS, SOCIAL COMPARISON, ECO-CONSCIOUS.
We interviewed users of solar panels and home thermostat systems to find common pain points and needs. From competitive analysis and user interviews, we were able to establish four main motivators:

We interviewed users of solar panels and home thermostat systems to find common pain points and needs. From competitive analysis and user interviews, we were able to establish four main motivators:
COST
The primary reason users implemented a home energy system was for cost savings. Users found out through their monthly home bills the cost savings.
CONVENIENCE
Users liked the ability to check their home system through a mobile device. Mobile access allowed users to ensure the system was working properly when they were away from home.
COMFORT
Users with families and young children wanted manual controls in order to adjust to their irregular schedules and changing needs.
ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS
Uses found monthly reports useful for tracking energy usage habits and overall cost savings.

The insights gained from user interviews and competitor testing were used to establish our target audiences and develop user personas. Using these personas, we created a series of use cases (Jobs to Be Done) based on our four main motivators.

After researching how home energy systems function, we were able to define and sort home behaviors to determine which associated appliances were necessary to display to the user and which would be automated by the Empower system.

After considering the insights gained from research and engineering constraints, we decided to design the product in a grided dashboard layout. Each feature represented as a card on the grid. After running through a series of iterations, we were able to clarify information conveyed on the dashboard.

During the lo-fi design process, our team worked with the client to develop the brand identity for Empower. Empower's main brand characteristics were: MINIMALIST, ENVIRONMENTAL, and POWERFUL. These characteristics are what drove the overall look and feel of the interface.

Our goal was to convey the necessary information without overwhelming the users with too many sections and graphics. We decided on two different types of energy usage visualizations for the user to understand both their long term and at the moment energy impact. We made sure the visual language was simple and clear for comprehension and ease of navigation. This style also ensured the interface was easily scalable for mobile and that data could still be easily read by the user.

CLEAR COMMUNICATION AND CONSTANT COORDINATION
Because the hardware and software of the product were being developed in conjunction with the web application, it was necessary for us to be able to adjust our designs as the goals of the company evolved and the constraints were better understood.
We realized during the lo-fi design process that we had to define and separate the client's short-term goals from the long-term ones in order to be purposeful in our decisions and deliver an effective MVP design in the 6 weeks we had.
0-1 DESIGN CAN BE RESEARCH HEAVY TO PROPERLY UNDERSTAND CONTEXT
Due to the complicated nature of home and solar energy, we had to understand the various technical systems in order to and effectively convey the necessary information about the settings and the system. It was difficult to ensure every team member had a consistent set of knowledge and understanding in which to approach this project. Luckily, our team was good at communicating concerns or questions so confusions did not persist.
